Ladies and gentlemen, we have had quite the week for competition within the CHSAA. Many teams experienced their first loss and some teams have yet to lose. In this article I will be addressing a plethora of matches, assigning the match of the dual, and breaking down the dual as well as talking about what some of these matches mean in the future. I have broken this article into two parts because the article would have been very long. I want every school mentioned to get the proper attention it deserves without it being drowned out in a large article most audiences may not finish due to its length. So, please enjoy the latest news within the CHSAA!
Starting off we had Chaminade versus Xavier. Where do I even start with this dual? Chaminade has been on an absolute tear this year beating Xavier via 58-16 score. We got a Supermatch in a rematch of last year’s CHSAA State Finals at 106lbs in the 118lb bout. Shane Meenaghan wrestled Devon Diaco and Shane proved last year wasn’t a fluke as he went to beat Diaco by a 14-0 score! Shane Meenaghan has been looking good and his momentum isn’t looking to be slowed down. Chaminade seems to be the top team this year as they have yet to taste defeat and at the rate they are performing they might not!
Match of the Dual: Shane Meenaghan (Chaminade) vs Devon Diaco (Xavier)- 14-0 MD
Next off is Iona Prep versus St. Anthony’s. This dual came down to the wire. After Iona defeated Fordham by 64-6 score they dualed St. Anthony’s and oh boy did this dual deliver? The dual came down to the final match where Robert Horan sealed the dual victory by pinning Connor Meehan in 52 seconds! This made Iona repeat the dual win from last year when they beat St. Anthony’s as well in a very close dual. Iona continues to prove why they are one of the top teams in the section this year, by taking out powerhouse St. Anthony’s in back to back duals.
Match of the Dual: Terrence Walden (Iona) vs Jake Podolsky (ST.Anthony’s)- 11-9 Dec.
Monsignor Farrell dualed Xavier on Thursday and the Lions blew out the Knights via a 51-9 score. Jack Geyer continues to prove he’s a top contender. Geyer who has been plagued with injuries in the past, not being able to compete in the CHSAA State Tournament due to this injury, has been on an absolute tear with most of matches ending by pin in the first period! We got a taste of another Supermatch between Mike Adams of Monsignor Farrell and Devon Diaco of Xavier. Both very accomplished wrestlers who have wrestled in the past with Adams emerging victorious every bout. Mike Adams showed his many improvements since the last season by taking out Diaco via a 18-3 techfall. Elias Emery has been dominating this year as he looks to repeat this year as CHSAA State Champion. He wrestled Dom Garcia of Monsignor Farrell where Garcia took Emery to the very limit. The match was back and forth the entire bout and Garcia almost pulled off possibly the biggest upset of the section! But Emery kept his composure and didn’t let the situation get the best of him as he walked out victorious by a 9-8 decision.
Match of the Dual: Elias Emery (Xavier) vs Dom Garcia (Farrell)- 9-8 decision
The Firebirds go down! Kellenberg had their first loss of the season from Monsignor Farrell. Farrell who had lost to Kellenberg last year at the CHSAA State Duals, avenged their loss convincingly. The Lions took out the Firebirds via 42-30 score. Max Boroweic proved last year’s CHSAA State Quarterfinals upset of Anthony Iadevaio was no fluke. Boroweic put Iadevaio away by pin late in the second period. Alex Melnichuk put on a clinic against John Trotta at 152lbs winning via 21-6 techfall! The Lions are continuing to prove they are top contenders. The Lions who at first seemed to be in a bit of a rebuilding year are to still be able to compete with the best teams in the section making them a dangerous threat to those looking to capture team titles.
Match of the Dual: Max Boroweic (Farrell) vs Anthony Iadevaio (Kellenberg)- Pin 3:00
