This year we were in for a real treat when NYC, Long Island, and Buffalo joined together in competition for the Annual CHSAA State Championships. Each winner from every weight class will represent not only their school, but the entire section in Albany at the NYSPHSAA State Championships. In this article I will be recapping and reviewing the insane tournament that was this year’s CHSAA State Tournament.

The Return of the Clash of the Titans:

Starting off our list was the most anticipated matchup of the tournament. The match between Mike Adams and Shane Meenaghan was fireworks in last year’s CHSAA State Tournament when Shane walked out with a 5-4 victory. Both wrestlers were returning CHSAA State Champs in 2020 and were putting a back to back crown on the line. Following last year’s loss Adams stayed at 118lbs to challenge the wrestler who had beat him in last year’s finals in a Desanto-esque fashion. Adams hit a slick throw by in the opening seconds of the match to score the first takedown and erupting the crowd. This was followed up by a nice scramble that sent both wrestlers out of bounds. Adams kept the action going with a fireman's carry, dumping his opponent in front of him, collecting back points and setting his lead to 4-1. Meenaghan was able to collect a stall point late in the 3rd period to narrow the score to 4-2. Adams reclaimed his throne in dramatic fashion, Adams was also awarded the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Freshman Start off with a Bang:

We were treated to a very exciting opening bout in the finals between two freshmen, Jacob Kennedy and Niason DaCosta. The bout was very entertaining as two scrappy freshmen got after it in hopes of being freshman CHSAA State Champs. DaCosta got the match going with a takedown after rolling through Kennedy’s shot and finishing the period on top. Kennedy got points on the board with a nice reversal to tie the score 2-2 going into the 3rd and final period. Kennedy stayed tough on top and finished the period on top sending the match into overtime. Here is where the match got interesting. In overtime Kennedy and DaCosta had an amazing scramble which led to no score taking both wrestlers out of bounds. When the whistle blew on the reset, DaCosta fired off a beautiful low single but Kennedy managed to sit the corner and scoot through resting with a crotch lock. Kennedy then rolled DaCosta through, cartwheeling over his rolled opponent and scoring the takedown! There were fireworks every second of the way from whistle to whistle. Congratulations Jacob!

Degl Gets it Done:

Sean Degl was a man on a mission. After falling short last year at the 138lb final to Mike Sanfilippo, Degl made sure nothing was going to stop him this year from winning CHSAA State Gold. In the 145lb final Sean Degl faced Jake Podolsky and won in dominant fashion. He started the match off with a clean double leg to take Podolsky down in the opening seconds. Podolsky wasted no time getting an escape just a few seconds after. Podolsky fired off a high crotch and this resulted in a fun scramble when Degl caught Podolsky’s ankle when he tried to finish his attack. Degl then scored a reversal halfway through the second period. He then locked up a cradle in the final 10 seconds of the second period and got the fall just before the buzzer. Sean Degl is your 145lb CHSAA State Champion!

The 138lb War:

The 138lb final was an absolute war. The final featured two hammers in Eric Grant and Mick Brown. Grant scored an early takedown to start the match off with a 2-0 lead. Brown scored an escape late in the period to make it a one point match at a score of 2-1. In the second period Grant scored an escape increasing his lead to 3-1. Grant gave up a stall point in the 3rd when trying to bring Brown back down to the mat and sent both wrestlers out of bounds to reset in the middle. Brown scored an escape off of the reset to tie the match at 3-3. There were very close takedowns for both wrestlers but they both managed to defend successfully to prevent any further score and send the match into overtime. In the overtime period both wrestlers shot into each other but Brown had the better position in the exchange cutting straight into a double and dropping down into an outside trip to collect the takedown on the edge. Mick Brown is now a 2x CHSAA State Champion!

Watson Captures Gold:

The 152lb final was nothing short of exciting. The bout featured two hammers in Dom Seminera and Max Watson. Seminera fired a shot right off of the whistle which led to a minute long scramble with Seminera scoring the takedown on the edge. This was not the only scramble we got to witness in this bout as right as the whistle blew Watson hit a fast switch off the whistle, almost getting a reversal but Seminera managed to catch Watsons ankle and roll through and create a stalemate. Watson however immediately hit another switch off of the whistle and fixed his small mistake that caused the last scramble and no score, collecting 2 more points in a clean reversal. Watson keeps his foot on the gas firing off more sweep single attacks which was the huge difference in this matchup, collecting another takedown. This is where the match gets interesting. Seminera gets another escape and the match is now tied 5-5. Watson fires off another shot and looks like he was going to finish but Seminera scrambles into an advantageous position almost scoring a takedown to take the lead. This is where there was somecontroversy. There is now 12 seconds left in the match and Watson fires off a sweep single off the whistle, running the pipe and collecting both ankles with Seminera on his back and possibly giving up a takedown he tries locking around Watson and the period ends as the ref throws up 2 takedown. After consulting another referee it was declared that there was indeed a takedown and Watson was declared the winner of the bout. The St. Anthony’s corner disagreed with this call and tried to overturn the ruling stating that time had expired so therefore there was no takedown. There were now three referees consulting with each other, the nature of the call and one of the referees gathered both wrestlers to the center of the mat (because the match wasn’t technically officially over they still couldn’t leave the circle) which led spectators to believe that the call was being overturned. This resulted in a huge boo from the crowd as they thought the match was going to continue. But the third referee on the scene announced that the call stood correct and it was ruled a takedown. The crowd erupted in cheers and you can see the excitement from Watson as he had just knocked off the defending Catholic State Champion!

Friars Repeat:

Congratulations to St. Anthony’s for capturing the sectional team title back to back. Last year the Friars took back the team titles after dropping the Team Gold to Chaminade in 2020. The Friars captured Team Gold with 324.5 team points compared to runner up Kellenberg’s 242 team points. The Friars walked out with 5 champs this weekend, this was tied with the 3rd place team Iona Prep. The Friars captured individual Gold at 102, 138, 160, 172, and 215 respectively. The Friars had a total of 16 placers. 5 Gold, 2 Silver, 5 bronze, 3 fifth place finishes, and 1 sixth place finish. Congratulations St. Anthony’s on this amazing accomplishment!

Zimmerman, Brown, Theroux, Goldstein, Bardak, and Martin Retain:

Congratulations to these athletes as they successfully defended their CHSAA State Titles this past weekend. They add themselves to the elite of multi-time CHSAA State Champs. Zimmerman won both CHSAA State Titles with a techfall in the finals and won the Division 2 M.O.W Award. Brown captured his first title in dominant fashion, although he had a formidable challenger he kept his composure and walked out a 2x CHSAA State Champ in a highly contested bout. Theroux dominated in his run to 2x as he won via 15-8 decision over Trevor Sheehan of St. Mary’s. Goldstein captured Gold in a rematch of last year’s final against Jack Ligarzewski. Last year’s bout was won by Goldstein in 2:44 by fall but this year Ligarzewski almost pulled the upset, but Goldstein scored a reversal late in the 3rd to win 6-5 and go two for two. We had another finals rematch from last year between Bardak and Vandenberg. Last year Bardak beat Vandenberg who was the heavy favorite to win at 215 last year via 6-3 final score. This year the bout was a lot closer and hectic. Bardak ran away with a 6-5 decision to become your 2x CHSAA State Champ at 215lbs. The last bout of the night was a quick one when Capri Martin faced Dylan Page. The bout lasted a little over a minute where stuck Page by the edge of the mat where his team was sitting, cheering him on. After winning he celebrated with his team with a dance.

Conclusion:

This year’s tournament was a very exciting one. The finals matches fired on all cylinders and the 102lb final really set a good pace for the rest of the finals bouts. There were several rematches from last year’s tournaments and they delivered! There were plenty of emotional moments, filled with both victory and defeat. The CHSAA is sending a fire squad to compete at the NYSPHSAA State Championships on the 25th and 26th. I can see all wrestlers make the podium and even make the finals as well. It’s going to be an exciting weekend of competition and I can’t wait to see how the guys do.

This year’s NYC League Tournament was as exciting as it can get. The top 6 place finishers will compete in the CHSAA State Tournament this upcoming weekend in Buffalo. In this article I will recap the 2022 NYC League Tournament that was held at Iona Prep. There were many exciting matches that took place and an explosive set of finals matches. So let’s get right into it!

Lion’s Reclaim the Throne:

Congratulations to Monsignor Farrell who reclaimed the throne in the NYC League Team Competition. Last Year Monsignor Farrell’s 15 year winning streak was snapped by Iona Prep. But this year Monsignor Farrell came back with a vengeance. Monsignor Farrell took back their team title with a total of 504 Team Points, shutting out Iona Prep’s 370.5 points for a runner up team finish. Fordham Prep finished 3rd as a team with 218 team points. Farrell sent 11 wrestlers to the finals and a total of 25 to the CHSAA State Tournament this upcoming weekend.

This year's competition at the NYC CHSAA League tournament was as stacked as it can get. There were a lot of matches to look forward to and oh boy did they deliver. There were highs and lows, and crazy upsets and moments throughout the tournament.

Adams Goes 4 for 4:

Congratulations to Mike Adams as he completes the 4 Peat! Mike just like his older Brother Terry accomplished the 4 Peat winning League Gold all 4 years of his high school career. He completed this feat with a Major Decision Victory over Paolo Ciatto of Iona Prep in the finals. Mike Adams is currently ranked #1 in the state at 118lbs and looks to keep this momentum rolling into the Catholic State Tournament. Adams was also awarded the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler to accompany his Gold Medal. Congratulations on such an accomplishment!

Farrell Crowns 4 Champs:

Monsignor Farrell is no stranger to League Gold, both Team and Individual. After last year’s runner up finish there was determination to win back what they had lost. The Lions sent 11 wrestlers to the finals with 2 bouts being teammates vs teammates, and most being against rival Iona. First up for the Lions was Jack Boroweic (younger brother of Max Boroweic). He started the Lions off on a high note when he captured Gold in just the first minute of the opening round against Connor Smith of Xavier. He was hype after the match and that hype definitely carried into the next 2 bouts. Up next for the Lions was Orlando Suarez who wrestled against teammate Ronnie Devitio. Suarez captured Gold just as swiftly as Jack did before him with another quick fall. Following Suarez was #1 in the State Mike Adams who battled it out with Paolo Ciatto of Iona Prep. This was the 3rd time this season these 2 have met and the bouts get more and more entertaining, and closer in score. But Adams calmed all doubt when he went on to major Ciatto 11-2. And the last Lion to capture Gold that evening was Mike Caserta of Monsignor Farrell who wrestled teammate Dan Buckley. Caserta won by fall in the first period. Caserta then showed an amazing sign of love and sportsmanship after the bout hugging his teammate and raising both of their hands showing that brotherhood and teammates win titles just as much as the individual wrestlers.

132 Gets Shaken Up:

The 132lb weight class may be one of the toughest weights in the section. Some of the biggest names in the section are competing in this weight and at the weekend's tournament the bracket got shaken up for sure. Returning CHSAA State Finalist Wyatt Shablak of Fordham Prep was probably the more favored wrestler to win the weight class but the returning finalist was upset in the semifinals. After being up a comfortable amount against his backup Joe Paladino. Joe locked up a headlock and tossed the returning CHSAA State Finalist straight to his back on the edge and got the fall. On the other side of the bracket was Terrence Walden of Iona Prep vs teammate Konstantinos Koufalis. The match was close until Konstantinos hit a clean blast double that took Walden straight to his back and locked up the fall in 5:26. Koufalis then went on to win against Paladino in the finals by a 12-4 Major Decision. And the 3rd place match between Walden and Shablak was fireworks as Walden won by a 14-4 Major Decision. The CHSAA State Tournament is looking crazy at 132lbs and we’re all for it.

Iona Crowns 7 Champs:

Iona Prep came into the tournament with a stacked lineup of wrestlers. Although they didn’t become back to back champs they had 7 Champs from the tournament. Starting off for them was Kevin McCarvill. McCarvill and Max Boroweic of Monsignor Farrell have been having a fun rivalry. This finals match evened the score of 2-2 with McCarvill picking up wins in back to back bouts. Their most recent match ended with a 17-7 major decision for McCarvill crowning him League Champion and the Champion of Champions Award. Next up at 132lbs was aforementioned Konstantinos Koufalis who won a tough bracket this weekend when he majored Joe Paladino 12-4. Last year he fell in the finals to teammate Terrence Walden but redeemed himself with a win in the semifinals by pin! At 138lbs was Eric Grant who put on a clinic the entire tournament pinning all opponents in the first minute of the opening rounds, winning in the finals against teammate Max Harkins in just 44 seconds! Sean Degl who is the returning CHSAA State Finalist from last year showed everyone he is a top contender at 145 putting his name in the conversation of the 2022 CHSAA State Champs. He pinned his way to the finals where he then upended Jon-Michael Economos of Monsignor Farrell via a 10-0 major decision. Max Watson was next up at 152lbs where he recorded back to back 1 minute pins in the quarterfinals and the semifinals before battling out a 13-4 major decision against Kyle Jacobs of Monsignor Farrell. The match got a little intense in the Coaches Corner as the ref was making calls that were preventing scores for both wrestlers. Which led to a small argument amongst the coaches. This only inflated how much was on the line here at the NYC CHSAA League tournament. Watson then continued to be all gas and no brakes as he went on to win with the aforementioned score. At 215lbs Gabrial Garibaldi pinned Fordham Prep’s Vaughn Johnson in just 55 seconds to win his first League Title and did so in dominant fashion. The last match of the evening was filled with fireworks as both sides of the gym exploded in chants throughout the bout. Capri Martin went to war against Ben Rosa of Monsignor Farrell. Capri and Rosa had some incredible exchanges throughout the match that had put the gym on their feet. This resulted in “ Let’s go Capri!” and “Let’s go Ben!” chants. But Capri silenced the other half of the crowd when he pinned Rosa in 4:56 in the 3rd period causing the Iona side of the gym to erupt.

Upsets Upsets Upsets:

The tournament had a couple of upsets sprinkled throughout the bouts. As mentioned before no one saw the upset coming at 132lbs with Shablak and Paladino. This match, although against teammates, definitely shook up the 132lb bracket for CHSAA States this upcoming weekend. Another notable upset was in the 170lb final where Xavier’s Matthew Scariano pinned Iona Prep’s Rob Sahagian who was the returning League Champ via headlock. And another notable upset on our list was Elijah Gonzaga of Archbishop Stepinac pinning Charlie Curry of Monsignor Farrell in the 189lb final. It was a back and forth bout until Gonzaga caught Curry in a scramble and stuck the Lion to win Gold.

Conclusion:

This year's competition at the NYC CHSAA League tournament was as stacked as it can get. There were a lot of matches to look forward to and oh boy did they deliver. There were highs and lows, and crazy upsets and moments throughout the tournament. The 2022 NYC CHSAA League Tournament was fun to say the least. It was a blast to see all these wrestlers compete and battle it out a week before Catholic States. There was a fun set of finals matches that not only the wrestlers and coaches were invested in, but the crowd as well. It’s amazing to see the spectators get involved in the sport and support their teams. I can’t wait to see how these guys do this upcoming weekend and see who takes home CHSAA State Gold.

The CHSAA State Championships took place on Saturday, June 12 at Iona Prep and oh boy did it not disappoint! There were a lot of upsets, crazy matches, and an amazing set of finals matches. In this article I will be recapping the tournament, it’s many crazy moments, as well as choose my picks for my favorite matches that took place.

THE FRIAR’S RECLAIM THE THRONE:

Congratulations to St. Anthony’s as they reclaimed their throne as the top team in the CHSAA. St. Anthony’s had a dynastical run with League and CHSAA State Gold in both individual and team titles. The Friars won the team title blowing out the competition with a total of 236.5 points with runner up Chaminade trailing with 165. The Friars had a total of five champs this past weekend at 132, 145, 152, 172, and 215 respectively. Starting at 132lbs Dom Seminera had quite the run this past weekend when he took out Luke Brydges (Canisus) by pin in 5:38 and then going on to major Ryan Paladino 11-2 in the finals. Frankie Theroux takes Gold in one of the most competitive weights after he teched Christian Schifano who had came off an incredible Semifinals win over Eric Grant (Iona Prep). Griffin Goldstein won his finals match pretty dominantly as he walked on and off of the mat in just 2:44. Andrew Bardak had one of most impressive finals wins of the tournament when he took out last year’s runner up at 195lbs Brayden Vandenberg with a close 6-3 score.

THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM:

Mick Brown captured his first CHSAA State Title this past weekend when he majored returning CHSAA State Champ Rocco Demartino (Chaminade) with a 11-1 final score. Brown who finished runner up in both 2019 and 2020 (at 99lbs and 113lbs respectively) losing to the NYSPHSAA State Placers in teammate Jordan Wellington in 2019 and Daniel Adams (Monsignor Farrell) in 2020. Brown showcased his dominance and speed as he claimed his crown atop the 145lb throne that he has so long awaited for.

IONA PREP TAKES HOME 2 INDIVDUAL TITLES:

Huge congratulations to Robbie Horan and Capri Martin who had captured their first CHSAA State Crowns this past weekend. Robbie Horan who was competing at one of the most stacked weight classes in the tournament takes home the crown after pinning Wyatt Shablak (Fordham Prep) in under a minute. Horan had to forfeit to 6th place at last year’s tournament after not making weight on day 2. But Horan ensured there was nothing stopping him from winning this year as he went on to dominate the 126lb weight class. Capri Martin dominated as usual as he walked into the finals and walked out with the pin win in just 1:42! Martin who is only a sophomore has 2 more years to dominate the heavyweight division and I don’t see him being stopped anytime soon!

XAVIER GET’S 2 INDIVIDUAL CHAMPS:

Jack Geyer who had been injured for a large part of his high school career finally went home with the Gold as he beat Trevor Sheehan (St. Mary’s) by pin in 1:45! Geyer didn’t let any adversity get in his way as he competed in his last high school wrestling tournament and dominated 160lbs. His teammate Elias Emery won his 2nd crown at 189lbs as he took out Dom Garcia by pin in 2:59. Elias finishes this season off undefeated as he adds a 2nd CHSAA State Crown onto his resume.

CLASH OF THE TITANS:

The 118lb final between Shane Meenaghan and Mike Adams did not disappoint. It was the most anticipated match of the entire tournament and it lived up to the hype. Shane Meenaghan won the match 5-4 after jumping out to a 5-0 lead at the end of the second. Adams wouldn’t lose without a fight as he narrowed the gap to 5-4 losing to now, 2x CHSAA State Champ Shane Meenaghan. Both wrestlers are returning Sectional Champs and NYSPHSAA State Placers and the match lived up to the hype as it was on the biggest stage of the season. That wasn’t the only hardware Meenaghan collected that evening as he won the M.O.W Trophy.

Overview:

We all know that COVID has been hard on all teams and everyone in the world but it was nice to see everyone competing this past weekend. It was very nice to have the inclusion of Buffalo (as limited as it was) at this year’s event. I saw many memorable moments this year and I wanted to give my takes on them and name my personal favorite matches from the tournament this weekend.

First off St. Joe’s Collegiate gets a freshman champ in Austin Zimmerman (first time since 2013). Zimmerman dominated whistle to whistle against a formidable opponent in Aiden McCalister of Fordham Prep. I personally think we may be seeing the next 4x CHSAA State Champion. Christian Schifano although not coming out on top this year had an amazing semifinals match against Eric Grant of Iona Prep. It was back and forth and Schifano ensured he was punching his ticket to the finals yet again.

Mike Sanfilippo wins back to back Gold. The NYU commit ran through the 138lb weight class which was one of the most toughest weights in the section. Sanfilippo’s wins this past weekend include Luke Sherry (Kellenberg), Jake Podolsky (STA), and Sean Degl (Iona) in the finals. Sanfilippo won his finals match with a 11-0 final score. I can’t wait to see what this amazing athlete does in his Collegiate Career. Sanfilippo finishes his high school career as follows, (4x CHSAA State Finalist, 2018-2019 runner up, and 2020-2021 CHSAA State Champ).

Dom Garcia although not finishing on top had quite the run himself. Dom Garcia had the harder side of the bracket at 189lbs when he took on Ronnie Jones of St. Joe’s Collegiate in the semifinals. Ronnie Jones was a 2x CHSAA State Finalist finishing runner up in 2019 and 2020 beating Dom Garcia in the semfinals last year at 182lbs. But Dom Garcia wanted his one last shot against Elias Emery and ensured he got it. Although Dom was trailing by a few points he made all of the right adjustments and ended up dominating the 2x finalist recording multiple sets of back points majoring Jones to punch his ticket into the finals.

Brendan Martin get’s it done at 110lbs. After dropping from 118lbs Martin went on a tear. He had outscored all of his opponents, recorded multiple falls over his most competitive opponents and proved to be a huge part of the Firebird’s lineup. We got a League Final rematch between Martin and Ej Alizio of Chaminade. Martin got the job done when he pinned Ej Alizio in 3:18! Martin only a Sophomore has 2 more years to win multiple CHSAA State Gold as he is now the top dog at 110lbs.
